Single handed swords are really hard to master. Spears are really easy in fact any two handed weapon is much easier. Also usually much more effective that a sword on it’s own. Movies have it wrong. A spear usually beats a sword as long as the spear man has reasonable training. Spears have been the backbone of armies for thousands or years not swords. A rapier is almost a singe handed spear.
