The argument goes that since Brazilians are from South America, they should also be called Americans. People from the country the United States of America should not imperialisticly monopolize the term American since it could technically apply to anyone from the continent as well as the country. (interestingly, when the same problem arises in Spanish, many people in Spanish speaking South America are satisfied with referring to Americans as “norteamericanos.” Wow – I don’t want this comment to come across as down on Brazil. That would be a false impression. I really like spending time in Brazil. And the best thing about my time there was getting to know Brazilians. But no culture is immune from a gentle ribbing about its stereotypes and quirks.
