The woman hurried over and I told her that this Dutch gentleman was kind enough to offer his countryman a plate of eggs, bacon and beans, with a pot of coffee. The Dutch father swallowed thickly, nodded at the proprietor and said, “Just put everything on my tab,” then skulked back to his chair. I could hear him whisper to his wife. I only caught ‘Dutch… dead rabbits… probably psychotic’ and that made me grin at his wife. She urged the children to finish their pastries, so they could get the hell out of there. As they paid their bill and walked to the door, one of the patrons looked at me speculatively and I said, “They’re Dutch. Used to the rain.”
