After about ten minutes, she leans over slightly and in this very rough voice, says: “You got a pound?” (I’m in the UK, hence the pounds). Now usually, if a stranger asks me for change, I decline, not out of frugality but because in the city where I live there’s someone asking for change every few feet and as a university student I rarely actually have any change to spare. However, this old lady seems a little put out and down on her luck, and she’s only asking for a pound, so I think ‘ehh, why not. I have a pound to spare and relying on the kindness of strangers must be difficult at best.’
