I found doing gesture drawing helped me get out my enthusiasm, energy and desire to get deep in to drawing and kinda settle into slower, more careful drawing. When i start i just want to capture everything and get it down on paper and that’s kinda what gesture drawing it. To me it feels a little like stretching and warming up so you can run a marathon.
