It is as important as proper grammar and pronunciation…perhaps more important. I blame the teacher. The kid didn’t even ask if I spoke Japanese. He just freaked me out. Yes, I look Japanese because all of my ancestors were Japanese except for the 2% Korean according to the DNA test. There is more to speaking a language than just words. If that kid went to Japan without learning how to behave when speaking Japanese (that may not be understood because of the poor pronunciation)…the worst thing is the rudeness level. Yes, foreigners get a pass for most faux pas in Japan.
