On January 25, 1945, he was a P-51 Mustang pilot with the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Air Commandos, 5th Air Force. While he was on a mission over Formosa (modern-day Taiwan), his aircraft took hits from anti-aircraft guns, mortally damaging his aircraft. Other pilots saw him parachute out. When the rescue aircraft arrived, they couldn’t find him. They did find his life raft with one glove inside. His body was never recovered. They think one of three things happened to him: I believe he made it to his life raft, was captured and executed for several reasons. His aircraft crashed 1/2 mile off the coast of Formosa, and the Japanese there were fanatical.
