Well, as I said, I had never used the front door, so I didn’t realize how many locks and chains were on it. Needless to say, it took me a while to get the door open, and when I did there were two policemen standing there – one on the stoop and the other on the sidewalk with his hand near his hip. But as I readied myself for bed a thought struck me: they believed me. That was a pretty lame excuse as far as I was concerned, but they believed me. They didn’t want to come in and check on the place, maybe look in the closets or refrigerator. At least find out that the phone was hung up voluntarily.
